Typical New Dad Experiences

The first few weeks of your baby’s life can be a rollercoaster of emotions. It’s common for new dads to experience the following.
  • Feeling a bit lost. During the first few weeks it’s common for dads to feel a bit like a spare part. Your partner has to cope with many of the physical aspects such as giving birth and breastfeeding which can leave you feeling a bit helpless. Don’t worry as there is still plenty you can get involved in such as nappy changing, bathing baby and lots of cuddling!
  • Trouble bonding. It can sometimes take dads a little longer to bond with their baby than mums. Lots of physical contact with your newborn is a great way to help you bond with your new arrival.
  • Changes to your relationship. The arrival of a baby into the middle of an established relationship can cause quite a few changes. It will take time to adjust, so just remember to be patient with each other and talk about how you’re feeling.
  • I don’t know what to do. A lot of baby care books and magazines are targeted towards mums which means that dads often aren’t as well read on the topic as their partners. If you’re feeling a little unsure, start by helping your partner with feeding, bathing, nappy changing and cradling and you’ll pick it all up and be caring for your little one in no time.
